Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

History & Significance

Established in 1916 under the Parliamentary BHU Act, Banaras Hindu University is one of the largest residential central universities in Asia. It was incorporated through the collaborative vision of nationalist leader Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, prominent educationist Dr. Annie Besant, and Maharaja Rameshwar Singh Bahadur of Darbhanga.

The New Vishwanath Temple (VT)

Commonly referred to as **"VT"** by students, the **New Vishwanath Temple (Shri Vishwanath Mandir)** is the spiritual and architectural heart of the campus. It was envisioned by Malaviya ji and built by the iconic Birla industrial family.

Its majestic white marble spire (*shikhara*) reaches a staggering **252 feet (77 meters)**, making it one of the tallest temple structures in the world. It serves as a majestic sanctuary open to people of all communities and backgrounds without discrimination, providing a serene environment for students to read and meditate.
